I was travelling through a Gatso yesterday below the 40 mph limit. The Gatso was set off by an ambulance and police car on the right hand over-taking lane. How does the Gatso differentitiate between the vehicle that sets it off and a motorist below the limit. I can't imagine that there is someone who manually examines the photos. So what happens? Also I cannot envisage that the emergency services would report every Gatso they set off. What happens if I get the NIP when I know I was innocent as in the instance. Whatever happens it would lead to a bucket load of hassle. Also what happens if there are several cars/lorries etc going through and they can't see the reg no of the speeder because it's obscurred by the other vehicles - presumably they would get off?

Howdy!

In theory the photos taken by the camera should be checked to back up the radar but invariably it doesn't happen. If you DO reveice a NIP, request copies of the photos that the camera took, go out and physially measure the spacing on the calibration lines (if its safe) and then work out your actual speed from that.

If you do get a NIP through, its well worth popping over to www.pepipoo.com as well.

So how else do they read the numberplate of the correct vehicle from the film? ;)

The police around here used to. Alledgedly.

Number plate recognition software - no human intervention required.

We have average speed cameras on some highways that "recognise" plates as they pass the first camera and record the exact time. The same process is performed at a second camera many miles distant and the time taken to travel between the two points determines the average speed travelled. If that speed is above the limit (by 2mph or more) a NIP is automatically issued.

All this is done without the aid of human intervention.

I thought that was only for trucks and, in theory, was to make sure they were taking breaks rather than speeding or have they expanded the system?

Hey, good to hear from you Ross - long time no post!

We have "SPECS" average speed cameras which use number plate recognition too, but the GATSO mentioned in this topic isn't that sophisticated, and will need human intervention.

As mentioned above, the operator should check using the elapsed time photos that the target vehicle was indeed the one that triggered the radar, but I have heard of many cases where they haven't bothered - just read the registration and wrongly assumed the camera got the right car.

Yep, Gatso = film = human intervention.
Although then there is Startraq. This may automate the process a tad more than is really needed. I didn't mention it before because I didn't want to confuse things, but... ah well... ;)
