I am shocked and saddened by Paul's passing. I logged on at work yesterday but it has just sunk in. My deepest condolences to Claire and Paul's close friends. I never had the pleasure to meet him but have spoken at length on the telephone in the past.

What will be missed is Paul's incisive style, an ability to cut through the froth and sieze the fundamental points, based on an exhaustive analysis of data. Which I admired immensely but never came close in my efforts. Totally the opposite of what the extablishment and their supporters offer. A true David and Goliath struggle.

I'm sorry he will not be around to see the establishment eventually fail.

Those likeminded who are left will have to do our best to keep what has been started up.

As others have said, an absolute shock and a terrible loss to the common-sense lobby who have supported this project since the whole speed camera debacle started.

I can only hope that Paul's work is still used to destroy the current failure in road safety policy, and that his death will not be capitalised on by those who have so eagerly slandered him in the past (George Monbiot et al).

Very sad news. Paul will be greatly missed. I had the privilege to be at one of his talks, given at a IAM meeting. Many of the younger members were in agreement with him although a few of the old (and not so old) buffers were grumbling into their beer but as soon as they spoke up he had them defeated. I will always remember it with pleasure. The UK motorist has lost a true champion.

Just found out today from Roger, just stunned by the news.

A rare voice of true common sense amongst the idiots.

You'll be missed.

My deepest sympathies to Claire.

Absolutely stunned.

Paul was dedicated to his and our cause. I've never known anyone put so much tirelessly into something for such little reward.

Words fail me.

This is dreadful on so many levels :( Thoughts are with Claire, family and friends.

Very few causes in my 40+ years on this planet have persuaded me to get my wallet out. Paul Smith's stand for common sense road safety policy tempted a life SafeSpeed membership out of me, and that is no small feat I can tell you. I wish his successor(s) the success they so richly deserve.

RIP Paul.

Hear, hear.

Paul was one of those rare people who truly believed in what he was doing and was prepared to put his whole life into it. A very, very sad day for all of us.

Shocked and lost for words, feel like I have lost a friend.

Why do the truly good die so young whilst the fools, spin doctors and other low life live on?

RIP Paul

Sheila and I are both shocked by the news.

We only met Paul once but his dedication and sincerity shone through.

Claire, there will be very little I can say to comfort you at present but time is a great healer as I have found. If you need to phone someone to talk you have our number - please feel free to use it any time.

All our love

Malcolm and Sheila

I am saddened by this news. I never met Paul, but we spoke on the phone once, about two years ago. I knew from this board that he'd been ill, but didn't realise what was about to happen.

Paul had my utmost respect because he was that rare man who went out and did what we all merely talk about should be done, and the world is a lesser place without him. Like moosepig I've supported few campaigns; however, Pauls determined one man crusade to expose the lies and propaganda of the lethiathon that is government compelled me to help. He devoted everything to dogged pursuit of a cause he believed, knowing it would be an unpopular and difficult uphill battle with many obstacles thrown in his path but carried on with conviction regardless.

My heartfelt condolencies to his loved ones.

I do not really know what to say, as words cannot really express this tragic loss. I most sincerely hope that this is not the end of Pauls work.

My condolences to Claire and family. Let us hope that the final epitaph to Paul will be the demolition of the automated "safety " campaign and a return to proper policing.

Recently registered on this forum, but I have been a long-time lurker. It always struck me that Paul was the "still, small voice" of common sense trying to reason with the closed minds of the establishment.

Not much else I can say, except to offer my condolences to Paul's partner and family
