Arrest after lorry crash
May 04, 2009

A SLOVAKIAN lorry driver has been arrested after a crash which left a woman fighting for her life.

The 25-year-old has been charged with dangerous driving after the smash on the A530 Nantwich Road in Stanthorne, Cheshire.

His Volvo articulated lorry collided with the 24-year-old Nantwich woman's blue Vauxhall Corsa at 5.25am on Saturday.

She suffered serious head and spinal injuries and was taken to Leighton Hospital. She was later transferred to a specialist neurological unit.

The lorry driver was arrested and remained in custody last night. He is due to appear before magistrates.

Any witnesses should call police on 01244 614270.

could be anything. according to some reports i have seen, 50% of foreign trucks in the uk have defects. many have drivers who are over their time and at least 1 recent case saw a hungarian driver with 2 digital tacho cards and driving licences use a magnet on the gearbox to disable the limiter and tachograph. i dont like foreign truckers over here but there is nothing we can do for now. we cant even charge them to use our road network through road tax or fuel duty. at least the authorities have identified them as a problem though. thats a start

Nothing Unusual <---- these days.

One good thing though is VOSA now have the power to "on the spot" fine foreign truckers.

Sorry for bringing up an old post

But always wonder how they trucks get to this country in the first place, with defects, and running bent.

Why arent they stoped in other countries for defects and ideally their own countries for running bent.

Hear all the time about UK drivers getting screwed over in places like France so how come other nations seem to be able to get through France and countries like Germany no problems.

I don't think the on the spot fines will make much difference in all honesty, infact think make things worse. Bent companies abroad will just give the drivers cash or a company credit card to pay such fines. There isnt a huge amount of enforcement so even at worst getting stoped every few months, still making cash by being able to do runs UK companies can't do legally.

I'd rather see these drivers in court, and if they don't attend court there is a warrent out for them the next time they passport control entering the UK. Rather the court get a lot stricter and ban a lot of these drivers from driving in this country which they can do, think its not taken seriously enough its a real public health issue some of these foreign trucks.
