Anyone know where I can get a laid up policy?

My bike decided to eat one of the cam chain tensioners and I need to change the policy to laid up while I get the engine sorted; I think it will end up in pieces for a while like Sixy's. Unfortunately when I asked my current brokers they only came back with TPF&T which I don't need as the bike isn't going to be ridden.

Also, will I lose my NCB? I've got about 9 years now and I don't want to accrue it all again.

Try carole nash - I think they do laid up policies. You normally have 2 years to maintain your NCB whilst without a policy. After that you loose it

If you're worried about theft, is it not covered by your contents as its not actually a vehicle?

Thanks blademansw. I didn't know about the 2 year retainer.

Not sure. As I rent I have a generic rental policy which probably doesn't cover anything that is not in the house itself. :(

BTW, thanks for the sympathy at the demise of my bike [/sarcasm]

It's only been two weeks and it's killing me already. Thing is that I know it could be up to a year as now it needs the work I might as well do a lot of the work I was planning to do anyway.

Still, on the plus side. I've had several mechanics who deal with R1's saying how great the condition of the rest of the bike is considering it's now done 75k+ miles :D

SO what's the damage apart from a new chain and tensioner? Did the cam slip?

Cam chain and cam slipped, valves in the pistons, bits of metal and plastic floating through the oil-ways :(

Now looking for a second hand engine.

Not bad for a 75K motor though...

I think I'll get the tensioners changed at around 50k on the next engine

I know how you feel mate - the gearbox primary input shaft bearing exploded on my TL1000S earlier this year. I was on the M4 at the time and I made a smoke cloud a destroyer would have been proud of. I thought at the time it was just the clutch pushrod oil seal leaking, it wasn't until I took the seal out and found bits of bearing everywhere.....I just bought a second hand engine from a later bike for 500 quid and stuck it in. I still have yet to strip the old engine though. Unfortunately this was a known fault on the early TL's.

At the time I looked around for other machines for about 3k, and none of them were a patch on the condition of my 10 year old TL - that's why I decided to stick a new engine in her :D

Wouldn't the best option be to get a new engine maybe of a scrapper - plenty of R1 scrappers around with perfect engines.
