I heard recently that supermarket car parks and their ilk are a major source of accidents. So I want to share a recent experience. This is no defence for me but I guess most of us have driven at a time when we have been worried, emotional, distracted, tired whatever. At such times your concentration is not 100% though usually luck and 'autopilot' get you through. On this occasion I pulled into a car park at 3pm for my first break of the day and a quick shop. I turned up a row of parked cars and pulled into a gap that I could see was vacant. The first thing I knew was something black coming towards me and a horrific bang. This my friends was the open door of a car parked on the left which I succeeded in closing! The car driver said it was already open - I had the impression of it swinging open. My insurance company said that from the damage report to both cars, I would have to accept liability. Ok just a dent on both cars. But it could have been a toddler not a door. I should have been able to spot this in time. So no assumptions that the space that you are swinging into is empty and just be ultra slow and cautious.
Cheers

Unfortunate but, as you were the one moving, it is probably down to you.

Even if you are tired COAST still applies.

Was the door that you "closed" or hit , the passenger side door? If so, how did the driver know that it was already open? If it had been open for a few seconds you would have expected a leg or something to have been "coming out" which would have been trapped in the door as you hit it. From what you say, I would guess that the person opening the door was not being observant and actually opened the door as you were entering the space.

My views do not represent Safespeed but those of a driver who has driven for 39 yrs, in all conditions, at all times of the day & night on every type of road and covered well over a million miles, so knows a bit about what makes for safety on the road, what is really dangerous and needs to be observed when driving and quite frankly, the speedo is way down on my list of things to observe to negotiate Britain's roads safely, but I don't expect some fool who sits behind a desk all day to appreciate that.
