I stress this is per CW!  But for the cyclists and to encourage them to join in the fun on this site and look a bit further at the site. It is aboout ROAD SAFETY and we want this for ALL!

I jest in the opening sentence of course. I do ride a bike for sport and fun and can see advantages in a commute if one is able to do so. But to our cyclists, please be aware that some people do have long comutes or need to drive for work which may be a factor in personal decision making. Not all can find work on the doorstep and cost of housing and removals and schooling are all factors which individuals consider. But in the interests of promoting cycling as a safe commuting option for those who can do so easily....and building bridges

This tips are for debate as I am sure some will find food for thought in any case.

1. You free up time for relaxation and fun.  (I know how I spend this  :boxedin: )

2. Riding each day will improve your training better than sporadic training :yesyes:

3. Starting the day off with a ride ratehr than a dull commute will make you more productive at work :yesyes: I do try to get a ride before driving to work

4. Journey time is controlled by how hard you pedal  You are in control and not dicatated to by traffic as much. :? :?

5. You can vary routes and intensity to get in a training schedule :yesyes: Have ridden in to work a few times - admit - but bit hard on chap who has to re-press my trousers

6. Daily riding or a ride once/twice per week in an excellent way of managing weight. ( :? I can carry me doughnut intake - ta!

7. You will save money.... :D :D :D  :yesyes:  8-)

8 You r commute will become the best part of the day rather than the worst. Some of us TOGSs like listening to Tel  and waht about white van man - in some areas I hear he comes complete with a camera :boxedin:

9. If you ride you will do your training in daylight.. :? :? :? SHIFT WORK! HUH?

DOH! They di not think of that one...

But to the board - what do you think? Good, bad or rose tinted?

What about the time it takes to get the bike out of the garage/shed. I can be half way to work by then. If I wanted that kind of hassle I would take the car!

Training for?

Apart from the one pelican crossing my commute is not dictated by traffic at all.

Hmmm, I can go the long way round or through the mud. No change there then.

Daily walking every day of the week is better. :D

On shoe leather maybe but then I have the bike to buy, and tires, brake blocks, waterproof clothing, more showering when I get home.

It already is ta.

First, what am I training for?

Second, it's dark when I start work and dark when I leave.

Nice idea but I'll stick to walking.

they could have emphasised better, but probably didn't as they're preaching to the converted, that most of us need to commute (quiet at the back their Homer) and most of us could do with more exercise. Unfortunately the usual reason for avoiding the latter is 'not enough time'. Well if your commute is your exercise then the problem is solved.
I know I certainly wouldn't be riding 40km every day if I had to do it after getting home from work.

After taking the wife's treader to work for a couple of days during the summer this year, I'll stick to a form of transport that has an internal combustion engine thanks.

Speaking for myself, 20 miles along the M54 on "me pushbike" twice a day doesn't sound like a real barrel of laughs... :)

I've thought about it. It's less than 7 miles to my work and not too hilly so it's possible, BUT what about when I get there? There are no shower facilities and I'm certainly not willing to attempt to wash myself, hair included, in the sink in front of the toilet cubicles.

Think I'll stick to the motorbike.

my last place of work didn't have showers so I worked out a deal with the gym a few doors down to use theirs for £1/day (with a locker).

Unfortunately I work in an industrial estate so that's not an option.

All mod cons mate - you can adjust the water temp all the way up to almost boiling hot. Literally. It's diesel powered.

Still not doing it, though.

:P
