Cyclist writes that he was visiting a pal inn hospital .. victim of a mad driver.who was using a handy held phone

He travelled on his bicycle – even though he has also been a victim of the “handy held phone driver”

He reminds that research shows ( I would say “seems to indicate” – as despite my own opinion over the pesky phones as a :nono: and most show atrocious manners by putting the damned thing before a face to face conversation :banghead: - this still has not been “peer researched” and thus does not “show” nor “prove” but seems to show some indication .. which means more work is needed  )

Anyway before I went off on a pet tangent  the cyclist who is not Al Ramsay declares that research shows and proves all drivers who engage in telephone conversation are more dangerous than drunk drivers. (I will concede the texter is very much lethal :yikes: I just do not know how . I cannot text without looking at the letters .. (I rarely do so. Wildy did try the other day. She said a short message took her 45 minutes as she kept hitting the “doofe Tasten” (wrong keys,., she uses a mixture in real life

But the cyclist concerned tells us per the MEN letters page that

Quote:

millions are put off cycling or wil not let their kids cycle because too many drivers show such scant regard for cyclists

Hang on.. they all drive.

In reality it’s the nightmare politics of the media which sees a kiddy fiddler everywhere and the mumpty from hell at the school gates. :yikes: Plus cyclists telling everyone else how dangerous it is.

Look.. it’s safe if you are taught to be aware and considerate to all others to the best you can.. and know the road and know how to protect yourself in a car and on a bike .. any damned bike .. pedalo .. electrico .. or motorollicking (as my wife would say)

OK so

The vast majority slow for the speed camera but not for cyclists

Blimey. You know he may just well be right. Wildy said on PH back when she first started posting that the camera has a Pavolian effect .. in that it trains folk to “slow for the camera” but achieves little else. I agree. I echoed her in my first post when Paul started this board. At the time – she stuck to PH and I to here. We occasionally now post our thoughts on both sites now.

Quote:

Some 300 000 trips to hospital are the result of road casualties

And again .. he is right on this one too. But the official stats do not support him.

But these incidents are caused by road user errors – all road user errors - and no robot cam can cure it. And it is why we need the police back.

And why the late Paul Smith campaigned so hard for this.  and RIP - I think the late Paul Smith will be honoured and acknowledged for his contribution of thoughts to general road safety and trying to encourage, at least, decent behaviour out there in time
