Excellent advice in CW this week.. very similar to advice I gave Diesle Moment when he asked about this
Takes 15 minutes to clean.. and it does reduce wear and tear as it does with our cars and motorbikes. .. and you check tyres at same time for thorns, glass and cuts.
Hot soapy water and a sponge and a toothbrush and bigger brush and lollypop sticks to remove debris from chain and spokes respectively - and degrease the chain before you start
then re-lube after all cleaning.
You soak your spnge and wash off all the degreaser and run the chain through the sponge. Reserve this sponge for this muckier job .. but be sure to clean it after use anyway
Use a mix of your brushes to clean under the bottom bracket and around the brakes. Rinse off the soapy water and rinse the cahin away from the bearings. (halfway betwen the botom jockey wheel and where the chain meets the lower part of the chainring is good)
Dry the chain with a CLEAN cloth and lubricate all moving bits with a good quality light oil. Try a dry formula as dirt does not stick to these.
Bart Leysen is responsible for washing all the bikes for Predictor-Lotto. He recommends a "system so that you do not miss anything"
You need to be able to rotate the wheels backwards and it helps if you secure the bike in a stand or try to hang it up with a noose around the saddle.
He says to clean the bike from the top down as you don't want to wash dirt back to the bits you already cleaned
and suggests cleaning the bike after each wet ride.
