Bolton News (Small paragraph on page 5 of today' paper and story courtesy of my sister Jazz.)
It is an update on a tragic case I posted up last January as I have been perusing the papers to try to make sense of the stats. Given the numbers.. it would appear to back the figures.. only these are not accidents caused by the ordinary normally law abiding and otherwise careful drivers.. but incidents caused by the blatantly and deliberately illegal
I reported last January that a cyclist had been left for dead in the Leigh area.
They caught the person and he has been charged with "causing death by dangerous driving"
Quote:
A driver accused of causing death by dangerous driving has appeared in court.
John P W. is alleged to have caused the death of Barry Hilton by driving a Ford Escort dangerously on January 21.
Mr Hilton.. a 36 year old father of two died at the scene of this tragedy in Leigh Road near the junction with Church Street
John W ./. aged 21 and of no fixed abode also faces charges of driving whilst disqualified, and without insurance in a defective vehicle had been expected to enter his plea yesterday but the case was adjourned until May 18.
John W who appeared at Liverpool Crown Court via a video link from Forest Bank Prison was remanded until the next hearing.
And so .. he will get time off for the remand .. and no doubt a reduction for a guilty plea.. and remission for good behaviour .... and people will fear justice has not been served yet again.
There is no excuse for this.. and if the courts actually passed a sentence which could deter these kids .. if their time inside was spent trying to educate alongside the punishment.. then perhaps we might have less incidents of this nature and less recidivist incidents too... perhaps.
I know .. in an "ideal world" .. but perhaps we should start somewhere.
Changing words in the Highway Code is not going to change attitudes to collsions ..or accidents .. . any more than the change of wording would undermine claims for damages either.
