On the 29th of November, I drove under one of the VSL gantries (marked at 40) with my speedo indicating just under 50. It was raining heavily, and I saw a flash (seemed to be only one). Was this lightning or am I in trouble?

It's a written guarantee that your speedo over reads, so I reckon you can shave at least 3mph off your indicated speed (the speedo in our car reads over by 5mph right across the board when compared to the GPS).

Allowing for the 10% + 2, the prosecution threshold will be 46mph so you are more than likely OK.
