I've just been sent a NIP for an alleged speeding offence and - for once - I dont think Im guilty.
Coming round a corner in a 30 zone, my husband said 'look out, speedtrap ahead,' as we spotted a parked car and a cop with a speedgun a long way up front.. We both looked at the speedo and I was possibly doing 33, but braked at once.. We sailed past the moneymakingmachine a few seconds later at minus 30.
But a NIP turned up stating I was doing 38. No way!
When we examined the 'evidence' online, it shows that I was shot at 245 metres but the equipment has been recently calibrated for distance checks at 25, 75 and 100 metres. In other words, I was shot at almost 3 times the distance for which the equipment had been calibrated.
Is this grounds for contesting the charge?
It appears that I cant ask for video evidence without pleading Not Guilty - once ive pleaded not guilty, presumably ive lost the option of a fixed penalty and have no choice but to go to court, right?
And is it only me who feels that if drivers spent a little less time staring obsessively at their speedo and just once in a while glanced at the road ahead, like we used to, it'd be a safer place??
And is there any point fighting it, does anyone ever win, or is it just a waste of time and money?

put three dots in a line you get a straight line, check a laser at 25m, 75m ,100 m you will get three 0 mph return readings and whatever distance thereafter

Hah, this is somewhat specious don't you think mate, seeing as how we're not dealing with a line? Put three points within the cross-section of a cone at three different distances from the apex and it does not necessarily follow that any further point on the extension of the line described by those three points (if indeed a straight line can join them) will fall within the cone.
