ive recently just passed my driving test and was out driving, we went through a stretch of road and the camera was facing the opposite way to the way we were driving. As we drove past and i looked in my mirror it flashed, we were past the camera by the time it flashed but now im paniking it flashed me or would it of flashed someone on the opposite side or someone behind? And if it did flash me, how soon would i recieve a letter confirming this? :?

if anyone could help id be most grateful as it would help calm some nerves

Gatso cameras flash twice and always take a photo of the rear of a vehicle.

Was the camera on your side of the road?

They must inform the registered keeper of the alledged offence within 14 days of the date of offence. If you're not the registered keeper it can take much longer.

It is common for Gatso cameras to flash even when they do not actually take an evidential photograph. Some housings are fitted with dummy flash units to make your scared and sometimes (I believe) they continue to flash after the film has run out.

Sounds like it could be a Truvelo?
Like here

They can be used in front or rear photography mode. (but, I believe, only one way at once.)

For front photography they must have a magenta filter fitted to the flash, which could explain the lack of brightness.

If used in rear photography mode I *doubt* they would fit a magenta filter, but they might, I don't know.

For rear photography it takes two photos, one of which would probably be at this sort of distance. If there was a vehicle going in the opposite direction, the flash looked magentery, there was only one flash and there were no lines painted on your side of the road (like in that photo) then I wouldn't be too worried.

If there were lines, two flashes and your vehicle was over the lines for both flashes then in 14 days the RK may well be the proud owner of some new photographs. Then you can start to learn what your rights are and what the significance of a PACE witness statement is...

hello andrew, thankyou for your reply.

I've driven through the road to check and there are no lines on the side of the road i was driving on, and have been told by 5 people that that perticular camera only takes pictures from the opposite way i was driving.

The camera isn't like the one you showed, the camera along that road is bright yellow.

After building the courage to ask my dad about it (if he found i get a ticket he wont be to pleased with me as only passed driving test on thursday last week hehe) but he said ill be fine and that camera doesn't take shots of both ways,

but ill wait my dreaded 14days and will let u all know, thanks for ur help :)

I know I'm going to sound like a real boring old f*rt, but please - treat that "scare" as a warning and modify your driving accordingly... The accident statistics for young and inexperienced drivers are pretty fierce, much better not to become one. Have a look at IanH and InGear's COAST threads - they do more for road safety than any number of speed cameras!

My g/f just passed her test last week. She was told by the examiner that if she collected 3 points in the first 2 years of driving she would lose her license have to apply for her test again. I thought it was 6 points in 2 years, but apparently they have changed it.

This was confirmed by her driving instructor too. :!:

Thats what she reckons anyway. Ive tried a search on the net and all I can come up with is the 6 points thing that Ive mentioned coming into affect in 1995 for all new drivers. Nothing about the 3 points.

Think its a bit unfair for a new driver to be banned on 3 points if indeed it is now the case. 6 points is a different matter however being the first few years for a new driver are going to be their most difficult time.

I'm virtually certain it's still 6 points - the 3 points thing is just a scare story.

Of course a lot of young people minimise the risk from this by passing their driving test when they're 17 or 18, and then going away to university where they're unlikely to be driving very much for three years.

Right, just called the DVLA and after a marathon automated response selection I can confirm that it still is 6 points and not three. Dunno why they said 3 :?

The dilema now is whether to tell her its 6 or 3 :) We had a heated discussion as to whether it was 3 or 6 before, but she might be a bit more cautious thinking its 3.

is it three endorsements? so you could get a 3 pointer, then another 3 points and be on 6 but not lose your license, but if you break the law on camera again you go over 6 and get a ban?

(guesswork only here!)
