If we take Brookwood's idea a bit further we could all have our own little bus waiting outside for us. To avoid the need for a driver we could, perhaps, drive it ourselves. It could then take us just where we want to go thus avoiding wasted mileage. Hey, that's quite a good efficient idea really. :) :)

Don't be silly that would never work. Just imagine everybody coming out of their houses all at the same time and wanting to go to work. It would cause chaos on the roads with traffic jams and congestion.

The Government would have to build special roads to bypass all that congestion and then they would become so popular they would become congested. So eventually the Government would have to try to tax that sort of transport out of existence.

No; that way lies madness.

If we are going to have our own personal transport they would have to be flying machines. :D

Free local bus transport for one.

I can see the attraction, but I can see problems too.

For a start if it's free they suddenly have no need to attract customers. I have my doubts that any 'committment to providing a service' will concentrate efforts to meet demand as well as needing to attract customers.

They don't "attract" customers, most people use buses because they have to.

Anyway, you just pay the bus company per free (or virtually free) passenger, problem solved.

Then there's the risk that 'customers' will respect it less and consider it to be 'worth what they paid for it'.

Or they may respect it more because they are getting something for nothing. If you have paid for a ticket you might think you "own" part of the bus and it's yours to do with as you please. If it's free then you are a guest. Guests behave better than paying visitors.

And if it's provided for free it moves outside of contract law. This might make it considerably harder to get compensation if there are serious consequences of a failure in the service.

I see that as a positive as well. No more false claims. :D

I like the idea of incentives for people to live near work but a tax incentive for one has to be paid by somebody so it inevitably becomes a tax increase for everyone else. Anyway, we already have a tax incentive to live near work - fuel duty!

As for making it easier to move, how many people work somewhere they would like to live? I think it would be as likely to lead to people moving further away from work.

Free bus service.

No, really, Leeds has a free bus service and it seems like a real winner.

The downside is it's only one circuit around the city centre and it would take about 10 mins for a reasonably fit person to walk across the widest section.

But at least its a start, a real attempt to make it easier to visit the city without a car.

Manchester has too. You step out of the station and there is a bus right outside, leaving every few minutes into the town centre. It is most civilised If every rail station had a decent bus service like that I'm sure more people would use rail.

Manchester also allows people with local rail tickets (i.e. from destinations inside Greater Manchester) to use the Metrolink trams free of charge within the central zone, which is very useful.

People who work in the same building but live near
each other (within 10 minutes say) drive each other
to work and take it in turns each week, so 2 people
are in one car instead of always one person in one
car. This cuts your mileage right down and also fuel
costs, plus it takes a car off the road. Its right for
so many reasons!

This is down to people themselves though. How
can you encourage people to be more "social"
or whatever it takes to encourage this "car sharing"?

Tax on fuel would be lost, this would never be encourged,
despite my solution being the most simple and directly
effective way to solve a lot of congestion problems and
also, the high tax burden itself, wear and tear on your car,
insurace is lower doing 60% of the mileage/driving you
would. Its nice to get a weeks break every week from
driving, everyone should TRY to do this!

Probably no point even trying to propose this though,
because it genuinely helps people and at the same time
hurts the Government, awww, they really don't have
ENOUGH power as it stands in this moment, do they?!
