i think that we should get together and make a drivers political party. we could go from just a presure group to a full-fleged political movwement and possably gety some mps. maybe paul could even be our leader?8-)

im sure that this cant be a bad idea. loads of people drive cars and hate paying fines. that could be our thing: "no fines, no limits"

The idea certainly has some attractions...

Hmmm... Although nobody likes paying fines, you won't find many, if any, on this forum who propose a cessation of all limits - there are several policemen, at least one of whom is of very senior rank, who contribute a great deal to the debates here and we'd hate to put them out of a job!

Sensibly set limits are a necessity for road safety.

OK, the total abolition of speed limits is not on, though it would certainly suit me  but I would like them to be advisory or have (as I've said before) an exemption for properly qualified advanced drivers.

As for a motorists' political party - the idea is appealing, but it would get nowhere if it simply focussed on the interests of the driving community. A political party can not gain power without having rational policies covering a pretty wide range of issues. Although, having said that, we have a sort of government at present......!!

Best wishes all,
Dave.

I dont know about "General" political action. But "Directed" political action, particularly at election time, has been successfull in the past.

Might I suggest putting up candidates against transport ministers/shadow transport ministers, other senior politicians and so on.

Dusty

I thought that this would be a good idea once. But then I though about it for about 5 minutes. It would be an awful idea.

In practice it would get very few votes which might be drawn from whichever mainstream party is least unsympathetic to motorists.

And few people (not even here) are single-issue voters to that extent. A far better use of time and resources is to seek to influence the policies of the parties that are likely to form a government.

I agree. We don't want a civil war between road users.

What we do need is motoring organisations to be more pro-active in MP lobbying.

I agree. I think most people here want a better transport network for everyone.
