Some tyres are designed to improve mpg by dissipating less energy as sound & heat. These really do work, but the improvement is only small.

You may also pay a price in grip. I remember a long life tyre called Dunlop Elite. Absolutely no grip. Cat on wet lino. Not recommended at all.

I'm happy to pay more for tyres and at the pumps for better rubber.

same with michelin energys, biggest joke ever. dry road, wheels locked in an emergency brake, and you're sat back in the seat wondering when the things gonna start stopping. 'kin lethal.

and a company wondering why it's vans get bent so much... I would love to see a graph comparing accident ratios to tyre choice.

When the pirelli's on my Ford Escort finally wore out, I replaced them with Falken ZE512.

£30 a tyre, and they grip like stonk, and last a good few miles better than, for example, Conti Eco Contacts.

for my spare, I have a Colway remould - yes I know, but if I've had to change the wheel, I only need to get to a tyre place with it...

Had those on my Xsara, little bit of ice, well under the limit 20 in a 40mph and put the car on it's side was just a passenger, changed to Avon's vastly superior !!!
