At the moment invalid carriages are restricted to 8mph, and you need a B1 licence to drive those anyway, IIRC. Let's try making that the limit on the pavement, but giving them a 20mph limit on the road - hopefully that should attract a lot of oldies out of cars and into something that is actually practical for getting around in for short distances. There may be a few more accidents from this, but probably less severe than letting them drive around in cars, which in practice we do at the moment, at least until they're picked up by BiB.

Would also make it easy to spot some of our most dangerous / vulnerable road users - as who else is likely to be using one?

sERIOUSLY - most of those driving those sorts of things could untill about 6 months ago do 70 legally on the motorway, most probably had the skills ,missing in our kids, to go a lot faster, and you condemn thm to 20 ,

Small, not very visible, slow and perhaps erratically-driven vehicles on the highway strike me as being a recipe for disaster.

I always find it a bit alarming when I see one of those 8 mph mobility scooters on the road

Disability can hit you at any age! My colleague at work broke his spine at 23 in motocross, another fell off a roof, my wife got MS at 33.

I think we are confusing disability buggies which can be painfully slow and the OP was proposing that they be allowed to go a little faster. I support this with the reservation that they can be very unstable and the road edges and pavements are not very flat.

Marc got his Toyota mr2 on hand controls chipped, lowered, stripped, fitted a roll cage and takes it to track days. Roger has an American van he can drive whilst sat in the wheel chair.

My wife prefers a chauffer.

No intention of poking fun at those who use invalid buggies- gives freedom to those who would otherwise be stuck at home - indeed have been known to park in middle of road to block traffic to help buggy with dodgy battery get up kerb. I respect the attitude of those who use them.
Too many people see these people as disabled in both body and mind, when it is only perhaps the legs that won't obey the brain.
Mind you when i am forced into one -it would be nice to do wheelies in one!!
One day some , if not all of us will end up in one - let's show them the respect now that we would like to get in the future.
