The latest diesels are very clean, with cats and particulate filters. We don't have to go back to gutless screaming petrol engines, technology can and is overcoming that problem.

Put it this way, would you rather be stuck in a confined space with a running diesel engine or petrol engine? Cycling uphill you can always tell when a diesel passes by, because of the smell. Petrol cars don't smell like diesel cars.

You may find this chart useful: http://www.haguidetofreight.co.uk/General/id94.htm

According to this table, the particulates emmisions for a new Euro 4 diesel engined car is still 5 times higher then a petrol engine, but an Euro 4 petrol engine emits twice as much Carbon Monoxide.

How much something smells is usually an indicator
to its danger but not always. North sea gas does not
smell but it will kill you in minutes. The smell is put into
the gas before it is transferred to homes.

Remember when "catalytic converters" were first
put on cars? They stunk to high heaven and yet
apparently they put out LESS harmful emissions?

How, if smell dictates whats bad? Catalytic converters
smell like rotten eggs, its so disgusting. I have to drive
half a mile behind these cars, but then I guess thats a nice
safe distance, FOR MY NOSTRILS!

Biodiesel has a fairly neutral smell, is sulphur free, is classed as carbon nuetral and has a better lubricating effect than 'mineral' diesel, Emissions of Carbon monoxide, Hydrocarbons and particulates are all reduced

Pulled from the Goldenfuels website: "The UK government has recognised the contribution biodiesel can make to meeting international targets for carbon emissions by lowering the rate of duty on biodiesel for road use to 25.87p/litre . This compares to 45.87p/litre for petro-diesel. Biodiesel for off-road use is taxed at a similar rate to ‘red’ diesel (3.13p/litre for biodiesel, 4.22p/litre for red)."

Downsides:

Nitrogen oxide emissions are a little higher - 105ppm against 98ppm typically,

Can gel up at about -3c but can be supplied with an anti freeze agent or running a 75%bd/25%md mix will give the same properties as mineral diesel.

Gordon Brown saying I got the country into it's current economic mess so I'll get us out of it is the same as Bomber Harris nipping over to Dresden and offering to repair a few windows.

Chaos, panic and disorder - my work here is done.
