(Dont know if it is still like this though.)

If you travel from Reading to Oxford there is a stretch of "Single carrageway" that is actually wide enough for 4 lanes of traffic.

When I made this journey regularly (many moons ago) I felt that this was the most "Free flowing" part of the whole journey.

Drivers who were "content" would keep well left allowing those who wernt space to overtake unhindererd.

If the traffic ever got heavy drivers would travel, or even queue, (though I never saw queues) side by side.

Soooo

Might "Wide" SC roads actually be better than DC ones (IYSWIM)

No, because some "anal" drivers don't think others should overtake down the middle in the face of oncoming traffic, and flash their lights and blow their horns at the arrogant maniacs

I assume you're talking about the A4074 (formerly A423) Dorchester bypass.

The A303 Ilminster bypass was originally marked out as a wide two-lane single carriageway (WS2) but because of a poor accident record was later remarked with alternating 2+1 carriageways.

Some pictures on this page (not my site)

PS: as a bit of a commercial, if you're interested in the finer points of road design, signing etc, as opposed to safety issues, take a look at the forums at SABRE
