The BBC R2 Jeremy Vine Show is running a rather ill advised 'vote a vehicle off the road week'.

But we don't have to go down without a fight - what top tips for promoting and creating tolerance on the roads can we come up with? I'm make damn sure the Vine Show gets them.

- Equal rights for equal treatments. For example 'bus priority schemes' promote intolerance of buses.

- The belief that they AREN'T out to get you.

- The belief that other road users are hazards to be neutralised.

- I'm thinking about more...

I can't believe this show. It is almost promoting unsafe driving.

Tolerance, or lack of it, is an unsafe state of mind. To learn tolerance of other road users is a skill like any other, but is one of the hardest to acquire. The better we think we are at driving, the more faults we see in others.

There is a skill in deciding likely behaviour using any clues available, but if you are right, be pleased with yourself and not angry with the offender.

I try and look at everything as a challenge!

That all sounds a bit sanctimonious - sorry.

FWIW, I'm tempted to nominate the Jeremy Vine Show on the grounds that it's an unacceptable vehicle of bigotry.

One of the boys on Truckersworld had an interesting idea...

Vine is somewhat infamous for being 'anti-truck' (I never listen, so I can't comment), so along with his 'vote a vehicle off the road' idea, challenge anyone to survive for 1 week without any reliance on trucks. Then, if they succeed, the members of the forum who've agreed to it donate £10 to the charity of choice of the participant.

I recon tolerance comes from understanding. I'm not talking about specific makes and models of car, but of vehicle type. eg:

-trucks get stick because they're big, slow and take up alot of room. So tolerance could be bred by showing WHY they need the room they take up and WHY so many need to be on the road.

-bikes get stick for filtering, 'sneaking up' on motorists, riding 'too fast' and being noisy. Tolerance could be bred by showing why we behave in certain ways (yes there will always be nutters, but also show that we're not all the same).

-cars. This is a tricky one. Drivers need to learn more patience and respect for one another. This will only come as people learn to take responsibility for their own actions and realise how they affect other motorists. Its a long journey.
