I didn't mean I THOUGHT Keep Left was the first rule of the road in this country.

It IS the first. You just don't see or hear it any more. It's taken as read.

How do you know that?

Google seems highly divided on 'first rule of the road': http://www.google.com/search?&q=%2B%22f ... he+road%22

Somewhere among my clutter, I have a very early copy of the Highway Code and if memory serves me right, it's on page one.

Cool! How early? I'd love to host a scan of an early Highway Code...

"Look where you're going" is the first thing that leaps to mind.

Look both ways before crossing the road. That's the first one I was taught anyway :)

Look both ways before turning left out of a T-junction.

I have always believed that the "first" rule of the road is that you should always drive at a speed where you can stop safely, under control, on your own side of the road, in the distance you can see to be clear.

The first rule of the road should apply to every driver on the planet, not just the UK (or Australia) so driving on the left may be better worded as drive on the correct side of the road for the country you are in :D

I tend to agree with Paul as I am a very selfish driver. My first priority is to survive the journey, quickly followed by how much I can enjoy the journey. By driving defensively and allowing room for the mistakes of others I believe I am a good driver and I have so far managed to meet rule 1.

I then drive to the conditions and if there is no-one else about, and no risk to any other people, I may choose a speed that might possibly exceed the limit. Please do not take this as "I need to speed to enjoy" - it clearly isn't a blanket statement but may apply in appropriate circumstances. I have one particular stretch of highway that is nice and twisty and I derive a great deal of pleasure by simply setting the cruise control to the speed limit and just flowing with the road. Obviously other traffic about will see the cruise control disengaged but when the road is clear it can be a lot of fun and 100% legal.

Possibly not top of the pops - but surely close " DRIVE SO AS NOT TO CAUSE ANY OTHER DRIVER TO HAVE TO TAKE AVOIDING ACTION BECAUSE OF YOUR ACTIONS"(I.E think of others aswell as yourself)
