We know that observation and attention failures at listed as crash contributory factors.

One crash causation theory is that drivers run out of attention - they simply fail to keep up with the demands of the environment - something gets missed and they crash.

At low attention levels, overload is easy to achieve. But it's still overload isn't it?

Good driving involves a lot of hazard management. We keep hazards under control at an early stage and prevent overloads.

So what part does driver overload play in (national) crash causation?

And what can we do to reduce the effect?

Is speedo watching a likely 'last straw' in driver overload situations?

Isn't there a lot of research about Pilot overload? Can anyone recommend any research? (I've got limited capacity to review papers because I'm mobile until about 7th November.)

I'm not sure if this may be of any use, it was one I put in the Arousal forum.

I may have some other stuff from the "arousal stuff". Load and arousal have an obvious relationship. I'm working on it.
