It has not been a good week in Cumbria for accidents, with several serious crashes around the county.
However in the past twenty four hours, there have been two collisions which were entirely avoidable.

A driver drove the wrong way along a stretch of dual carriageway within Carlisle, before colliding with several cars - the last one head on.
He was fleeing police who had spotted him driving at speed.

After fleeing his wrecked vehicle, he jumped over a bridge, and is now seriously ill in hospital - as are some of his victims!
One can only hope he saves the country the cost of a trial. :(

The earlier accident involved a Wigan man, exiting the motorway at Shap, and when he got to the end of the slip road, he collided with two horses and riders.

Both horses were killed, and the riders were both injured.
The driver, a 70 year old, has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving.
One cannot imagine the carnage he could have caused had he made a driving error on the motorway - and wonder at the wisdom of speed cameras on motorway bridges!
Even if he had been speeding, he would not have been STOPPED. :(

But hey - speed enforcement by camera is cheap, and lots of people support it, so who are we to criticise! :x

I should have attended the Shap job but I was off on leave, shame that the 2 horses had to die.

The driver involved in the horses incident has now been charged. :(

The driver who drove the wrong way, hitting two vehicles, one head on, will not be appearing in court.
The 30 year old driver has died in hospital, surrounded by his family. :(

No news on the innocent drivers whom he struck - one hopes they will be OK.

Oh goodness me! That form of retribution is harsh and distasteful. Let's hope your sentiments are not realised.

Too late - did you not read the post above?

What IS distasteful, is criminal behaviour which results in innocent drivers and their families being seriously injured through no fault of their own.
You should know - you banged on about the effects of accidents on the victims time and time again on the CSCP web forum!

You even produced figures for the cost of a fatal road accident, which included a notional amount for pain and suffering to the family.. or have you forgotten that now?

This mans family are not going to get compensation, and will have to live with the consequences of his actions for the rest of their lives... as will his victims.
