I was taken off my bike some years back by a woman who had failed to clear the snow from her rear windscreen, and so was utterly unaware of my presence as she swung into me. I know it's cold, but why sacrifice situational awareness and thus endanger life? I personally clear every area of transparency that I am able to, it all feeds in to the big picture.
Robin - no lecture - but , I take the view that inside /behind a car ,the driver in front has not seen me till there is proof that he/she has seen me( and in that situation ,it's MY responsibility to keep safe) -that's in a car ,and I will use horn to re-inforce that and let them know that I am about . On a bike -I'd be very wary of any driver till I knew they'd seen /acknoledged me .Old dad to son proverb -"better to be live coward than dead hero" -that came from man that I've just found out was in a lot of action in WW2 - like Monte Casino -and was regarded by his batallion mates as a hero .
Personally ,i'd like to see Police vehicles stopping cars with windscreen /front windows (at the bare minimum) with ice/snow -or at least till the windows were clear -or issueing a FPN for due care /whatever appropriate .But then ,I'd also like to see police stoping bikers on icy footpaths and issueing FPN for cycling without due care .Sort of sauce for the goose .And BTW -I'm also getting a bit P**d off in my local park at night taking doggy for walks with "cyclists " with little/no lights ,on icy paths expecting me/my mrs/dog to give them right of way on pedestrian territory . All of these paths have the "no cycling" signs - and I've even seen PCSO( in pairs - they don't venture out alone -wonder why ??) on these paths -so what hope for the average cyclist ?
