Had one on the Southbound side of the bridge immediately south of Killington Services. Not one of the original bridges.

Also seen a few times at "The Hill", Millom enforcing the 30mph, Milnthorpe Rd, Kendal outward.

The Ings one by the bus shelter is of course a complete joke

Saw one late on Monday morning...

...SOUTH of PRESTON! (although he was driving along the M6, not actually scamming). Wonder what it was up to??

Saw a camera van today on the A591 - for the first time in well over twelve months, at the bottom of Ratherheath Hill, in the lay by just past Plantation Bridge.
The site does have an accident history - Ken Hardy was knocked off his motorcycle and killed by a careless pensioner, who pulled out of Winter Lane.
An elderly couple were killed by Ashes Lane by Bernie Connor, who had been drinking all day in Kendal before driving home to Windermere, but none of these accidents were attributed to speed.

There used to be a traffic officer who monitored that spot - but he used to flag down the offenders and deliver a lecture and points - I even posted up here the day he flagged down a coach.

Unfortunately the CSCP attempt at road safety was badly placed - a motorcyclist was killed on the A591 - near Thirlmere, when he struck a stone road sign.
So what happened to the theory that the camera effect persists beyond the camera site?

Seen on two different park up points recently on the A596 in West Cumbria. In the layby at Aspatria as you leave the town towards Wigton, just over the brow of a hill in the 30 mph zone - trying to catch motorists as they speed up towards the NSL stretch. Also in Waverton in a layby round the bend as you come out of the NSL into the 40 mph zone heading towards Wigton. I've travelled this route to work nearly every day for the last 15 years and don't recal any accidents at those two locations. :scratchchin:

They were sat on the CNDR just after the end of the 2-lane bit near ASDA today, First time I've seen them there. I imagine it will prove to be a popular spot as it's the usual "shooting fish in a barrel" location.

Just saw one this morning A 5086 in Lamplugh - just before the long, safe overtaking straight by the Lamplugh Tip pub.

It provoked an interesting question from 9 year old daughter:

"Daddy, what's that van doing"?

"He's taking pictures of any cars that are going too fast so he can send them a fine when he gets home".

"Why is he doing that"?

"Because he thinks it will make the roads safer".

"Why are they never on the little wiggly roads where we see crashed cars then"?

"Good Question"!

Wonder if a certain person will pop in to answer that one :D ( or could this be a question he would rather ignore ,like the rst)

Thereason you don't see them for ages, is that they are off addressing OTHER road safety measures, such as persuading drivers to look where they are going, checking tyres, and taking drunks off the road.

They are not just a one trick pony you know... well not according to Greenshed!

Well he's got optical illusion - you don't get much of a view through an optical instrument raised from some depth from a :sub: .But then when some so called professional sailors can't read charts on sandbanks around northern large Scottish islands, and read warnings of rip tides (well known to land lubber like me), what hope is there for road safety when these blokes turn to road safety .

They were sat on the bridge just before Jct 42 of the M6 on Thursday morning, aiming at S/B traffic but parked above the N/B carriageway, presumably to be out of sight for as long as possible due to the long right hand curve that makes up that stretch.

They were out on the A69 last weekend too, by the "Welcome to Cumbria" sign - where the road is straight for well over 2 miles. Pleasingly everyone a couple of miles either side of them was being community-spirited and flashing headlights, so hopefully they were bored as well as freezing

Going a little bit OT,but this seems to be trend nation wide, as far as I've seen /heard. I've seen them in Warks on A46 southbound, with little traffic( Hdden by a sweeping bend). Again on M74, favourite places in D & G are J3,(Abington turn off) or next one south.(J14).
All hidden by sweeping bends, and ( times I've seen them with little traffic) Another one in North Warks, targeting as site (IMHO) 300yarda away, under the camaflage of some well endowed trees. I knwe it was there(I'd passed it going the opposite direction),but from that distance it could be some bit of hoarding.
.
Again, they are highly visible once round the bend. But what deterrent effect does this have.
Possible parallels with the tactis used in the cold war?

But we are told speed cameras ( or as they call them ) are there to deterby VISIBLE presence.

Two sightings in one day today!

The first one was in a bus stop (good work guys, very considerate) on the A689 at Crosby Moor, looking down a long straight with no junctions apart from at either end, and the second was at the Sands in Brampton, tucked away at the side sniping at folk coming down the hill where it goes fron NSL -> 30.

As ever, though, lots of community spirit going on with everyone giving a neighbourly flash of e headlights for a couple of miles either side of them so hope they were cold *and* didn't have anything to show for it!
