I was quietly ordering a steak canadian sandwich and a cup of tea this morning when some Utilities employees arrived. One said: "any of you boys HGV drivers? Because one have my mates has just been 'done' by the westbound camera on the A590 at witherslack (eastbound currently has no power to it apparently) for exceeding 40mph". He said there's some new thin tarmac lines (just past the camera amongst the white lines) which cover up underground weighing scales. Certain weights will trigger the camera at the HGV speed limit, in this case 40mph.

Another cash cow?

Now there must be at least a dozen of these hi-tech cameras in Cumbria now and most of them are on single carriageway roads at 60mph for cars (A590, A69, A595). As it is so difficult to overtake on these roads with the increase of chevrons, traffic islands etc, and certainly difficult to get passed HGV's, are Cumbria's finest in effect reducing our speed limits to 40mph?

I think we should be told!

They are not that new!.

Hgv drivers must be aware of the 40 limit on single cariageway roads and that there are ways of detecting an HGV. I would not gamble on any type of cameras capabilities to detect the size or weight.

If you want a cheap basic level sat nav including camera locations I can reccomend the navman f20 £130 from argos. It works streight out the box. It can work 3 hours without being recharged. It is very easy to use. It has a clear/loud voice that I can hear. You have very little need to look at it. as a result I had good instructions before I even saw the roundabout signs and a stressless trip across tricky roads I did not know
