On Thursday day, it was reported that a woman was killed when a recycling wagon knocked her down.
She was a member of the recycling team, and the incident took place as they collected from our local infants school which both my children attended when they were younger.

The local paper reported yesterday:
The Westmorland Gazette wrote:
Woman dies after collision in Windermere school grounds

A 57-year-old South Lakeland District Council worker has died following a road traffic collision involving a recycling van, at a Windermere school, this morning.

It is understood the woman was sorting out the recycling at the time of the accident which occurred at the grounds of St Mary’s C of E Nursery and Infant School, Princes Road.

Police were called to the incident at around 10.59am this morning after reports a female pedestrian, believed to be in her 50s, had been involved in an incident with a South Lakeland District Council Recycling van.

A North West Ambulance Service spokeswoman said the woman 'went into cardiac arrest at the scene' and was transferred to Royal Lancaster Infirmary.

She died in the hospital at around 12:20pm.

Parents of children at the school were sent text messages informing them about the accident and the fact that no school pupils or staff were involved.
The school remained open after the incident.

One parent, who has a daughter at the school but didn't want to be named, said she was 'very shocked by the news'.

"We were reassured by the school that no children were hurt.
"But you don't know if they saw anything. It's awful news.

"You would think the van wouldn't have time to build up any speed when it was moving in the school grounds."

Lawrence Conway, Chief Executive of SLDC, said: "South Lakeland District Council would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of our colleague who was a very valued member of staff and will be greatly missed.

"We are fully cooperating with the Health and Safety Executive and the Police in their investigations."

Police are investigating the circumstances and any witnesses are asked to call South Cumbria Roads Policing Unit on 0845 33 00 247.

The circumstances of this latest event are still to be investigated.
It is possible that she was taken ill as she worked, and the accident was a result of this.

However, the comment from one of the parents was very telling of the damage done to public perceptions by the DfT, SCPs and BRAKE et al.

That's right - only SPEEDING vehicles can kill, so it's alright to step out in front of a vehicle which isn't speeding... isn't it?

No wonder our road safety is in a mess these days!

Yep, we had a dustman killed by his own dustcart a few years back. I think that people don't realise the dangers of slow moving vehicles which can crush or injure at very low speeds. This is probaly why there are so many 20MPH zone accidents. As Ernest rightly says, the "speed kills" messge has been brainwashing people against all the other dangers to be found around heavy peices of metal that move.

My views do not represent Safespeed but those of a driver who has driven for 39 yrs, in all conditions, at all times of the day & night on every type of road and covered well over a million miles, so knows a bit about what makes for safety on the road, what is really dangerous and needs to be observed when driving and quite frankly, the speedo is way down on my list of things to observe to negotiate Britain's roads safely, but I don't expect some fool who sits behind a desk all day to appreciate that.
