:hello: :welcome: windyrog

I recall a previous poster on this forum (a Highway Engineer) stating that Hi Viz just made you a better target, and that you would be better off wearing all black and developing the skills of a Ninja!
After riding a bike to and from work for a while, I am beginning to understand what he meant!

I am wary of Hi Viz now - I carry it in the car, and wear it on my bicycle, but realise that for instance on a construction site I would not really stand out!
On my bike, at night I wear reflective bracelets with flashing red LEDs on my ankles which are more effective than wearing them on the arms (where they are intended) as to an approaching driver, the red LEDs are flashing as they go up and down with the pedals! The movement is more effective than the lights or reflective stripe, which can be found attached to bits of roadside furniture too!
So Hi Vis CAN be effective - but should be used in the right way - and simply making it compulsory is not the answer - there has to be some education like the old "See and be Seen" adverts on TV.

:yesyes:

Easier to spot a needle in a haystack than in a pile of needles.

I bet if I rode naked everyone would see me. Not sure what I’d do when I get to my destination though and I might scare any horses on the road :P

Hi Windyrog & :welcome:

(Long time no read Rush. Nice to see you back :) )

 Well as long as it stops them pulling out in front of me, and it'll give them something to tell their grandchildren. :)

 Maybe I should do a kind of Lady Godiva on my Kawasaki through Portsmouth :D I've got room for a pillion anyone? :P

Saw a guy on a motorbike a few months back, he had a hi-viz vest on, but on it it said "I'm only wearing this to cover somebody else's arse" which sums up my feelings on hi viz.

Me too. I'd like one of them weep. Let me know where they sell them if you find out :)

Personally, I think High Viz in the right place is very good. I don't think that if everyone was wearing it that you would fail to stand out.

I used to work for Parcelforce where wearing High Viz and putting flashing hazard lights on, when manouvering vehicles about, inside the depot was compulsory. When you have dozens of people walking about and loads of vehicles reversing into tight spaces within the confines of what amounts to something like a large hanger, it's so much easier to spot people when they have high viz on.

My views do not represent Safespeed but those of a driver who has driven for 39 yrs, in all conditions, at all times of the day & night on every type of road and covered well over a million miles, so knows a bit about what makes for safety on the road, what is really dangerous and needs to be observed when driving and quite frankly, the speedo is way down on my list of things to observe to negotiate Britain's roads safely, but I don't expect some fool who sits behind a desk all day to appreciate that.
