..was the week 23-29 November 2009. :yesyes:

I am sure that you all saw the publicity on Radio, TV and in the national and local press. :shhh:

Did your local Safety Camera Partnership stage any special events to mark the occasion? Cumbria didn't - they were too busy! Safer Roads for Cumbria is still showing their program for 2007 on their website, but surely SOMEBODY organised something???

Did you see BRAKE making a determined effort to draw attention to the "Not a drop, Not a drag - Stay Sober, Save Lives" theme of this years campaign? :readit:

You didn't????

Well visit the website to see what you missed! :typing:

http://www.roadsafetyweek.org/

Well that's it for another year - and another 12 months to plan all the activities for next year.
Put it in your diaries now, in case you miss the announcements next year too.

Surely we should have fiftytwo and a bit road-safety weeks every year

I do... but I see lots of road users who would benefit from even a week of heightened awareness.

Not least cycle riders with no lights, and drivers who drive as though such cyclists are a thing of the past!

Starting with use of lights would be good - had a chap/ess today after I overtook, (?deliberately) re-apply his main beams, blinding me to a degree and the next oncoming car, he did turn them off for him/her eventually but then turned them back on ! Was he 'angry' or upset by the overtake - certainly a totally safe overtake ... was s/he suffering from night myopia or other ailment, s/he had been steady in their course ... so that seems unlikely ....
So a reminder to car light controls would be a good start.
Anticipating hazards is another.
What to do when we start to see developing hazards.
Courtesy and expected behaviour ...
and so on ...

Totally safe overtakes can often bring headlight flashing by the 30's plenty brigade, it's their contribution to road safety and car control..., these people can usually be spotted driving in fog at 10 MPH with no lights or sidelights only, they realise that conditions are bad and safe driving is called for but don't really know what the next step is....

My views do not represent Safespeed but those of a driver who has driven for 39 yrs, in all conditions, at all times of the day & night on every type of road and covered well over a million miles, so knows a bit about what makes for safety on the road, what is really dangerous and needs to be observed when driving and quite frankly, the speedo is way down on my list of things to observe to negotiate Britain's roads safely, but I don't expect some fool who sits behind a desk all day to appreciate that.

Sadly what I have observed lately, is all lights on including rear fog lights, but driving about 10ft from the car in front, who also has on their fog lights too ... (well minus the main beams - although I did have someone the other day after an overtake decide to reapply the main beams even though I was a bit in front of him/her ! Rather baffling).
Where are the public info films to help remind people on what good driving behaviour is ?
