(From the version reprinted in 1932)

Here's the first two paragraphs:

The Minister of Transport wrote:
A NOTE OF INTRODUCTION
BY THE
MINISTER OF TRANSPORT

By Section 45 of the Road Traffic Act, 1930, the Minister of Transport is directed to prepare a code of directions for the guidance of road users, to be known as "The Highway Code."
During the passage of the Act through Parliament, the opinion was expressed almost universally that, although legislation and regulations more appropriate than those then in force might help to reduce the dangers of the road, much more could be done to ensure safety by the instruction and education of all road users as to their duties and obligations to one another and to the community as a whole.

Edit: And here is the rest: The Highway Code 1931 (Reprinted 1932)

Interesting snippet!

Gone are the days when persons in a position of authority had some knowledge of their subject. :(

I've got a 1935ish version, complete, received about 3 weeks back from forum user Oscar.

I've been so busy I haven't got around to scanning it yet.

Thanks Oscar, and apologies. I'll get to it soon, I promise.

I have a 1931 edition, reprinted 1932 which I can scan. Brown cover. Code 55-166 on the front. Codes: (10743) Wt. P123/7082 300m 6/32 Hw. (T.9076) on page 3.
I don't know how "Crown Copyright" works though.

Copyright is a commercial protection. If you don't do anything to cause them financial loss you should be safe enough.

Losses could be cause if: a) you profited from it or b) reduced their ability to profit from it.

Neither seem likely...

Cheers, Paul. Wondered if you received it!

BTW, it's yours to keep. I don't want it back. :)

Ok, I have scanned all the pages, I have chopped them up, cleaned them, shrunk them and PDFed them. That only took a few hours...

Here it is:

The Highway Code 1931 (Reprinted 1932)

Yeah, seconded. I missed this thread the first time round.

I do like reading things from yesteryear. They seem to be written in a well-spoken accent. ;)

I'm glad someone liked it!

I'll have to scan some of the others I have eventually. The earlier ones anyway, they seem to have grown quite a lot... :|

Not including covers and adverts the first has 21 pages and the latest has 145.

Oh raather!

I find it interesting where they use words or phrases which we have abbreviated, like "advertisers announcement". I didn't know that is where the word "advert" came from. Or at least I assume that is where it came from.
Also they use "motor cyclist" as two separate words.

I keep thinking that it would be nice to make our own set of "rules" as the current Highway Code is quite excessive and very much based on UK law now. The main information should be how to safely use roads and should apply as best as possible to any form of road traffic in any country and not be based on any law. Then it could have sections specific to different vehicles, and different signs, and other things which are important...
I found it quite easy to read the 1931 Highway Code. The 2007 one was not as easy and I had to come back to it a couple of times due to getting bored part way through.
