It's been a while since we had an A5 / A444 thread... well they still havent done anything to the redgate junction although i have noticed some roadworks & roundabout changes on the other side of atherstone, not sure why.

anyway i went up from the m69 junction yesterday where they've reworked these bends.

segregated shared use path on both sides & general widening of the verges & trees means visibility is much improved.

limit dropped to 40 (till after the new roundabout) and camera van parking bays on the bends

Can't remember where i put it ,but there was a bit on front page of HEN about an island being put in place of the Redgate junction. (http://www.hen-news.com/)About 25/26 June 2007.Much the same sort of thing proposed in Covettry Evening Telegraph some time ago. Possibly being played down as the cameras don't seem to have done much ( but you can bet tht they'll still be there afterwards and the cams will get the credit ).

If i find the article ., will post it up re island.

edit - tried a search on A5 on the above --

"ROUNDABOUT FOR KILLER JUNCTION
EXCLUSIVE by CLAIRE HARRISON
A ROUNDABOUT will be installed at a killer junction to stop more lives being claimed and injuries suffered.

The Heartland Evening News can exclusively reveal that the Highways Agency will install an off-line roundabout on the notorious A5/A444 Red Gate junction near Nuneaton.

The much-needed safety measure could be in place within the next two years after the Highways Agency announced that it was the option chosen following public consultation.

The News launched a campaign two years ago to fight for action to be taken at the notorious junction which has claimed scores of lives and injured hundreds.

Now, ten months after a two-day public consultation at the nearby Red Gate pub where local residents and businesses were given the chance to choose which one of three options, the off-line roundabout has emerged as the winner.

It is expected that the roundabout will be constructed on agricultural land to the north east of the Weddington Lane Junction, allowing traffic to access from the A5 Watling Street, north and south, and the two legs of the A444.

A spokesperson for the Highways Agency told the Evening News that they are now working on a more detailed plan of the off-line roundabout

"Option three - the off-line roundabout - has been selected and we are now working on a more detailed design," she said.

"We expect that to be finished by the end of the financial year, the plans will then go out to public consultation again before we can start any work but obviously we want to get started as soon as possible."

A grade separated junction, including a link road over the A5 connecting both legs of the A444 and an online roundabout were the other options that Highways Agency bosses put forward in the public consultation.

For more information about the off-line roundabout and the public consultation keep an eye on the Heartland Evening News."
