So what do you see as the exact problem?

And what do you think would help?

Have the police or the council carried out a speed survey? What were the results?

See the article on my website entitled Traffic is Killing Our Village!

You need to think very carefully whether the main problem you are encountering is traffic speed or traffic volume.

Also I would echo what Paul said that you should get a proper speed survey done. Perceptions can often vary significantly from actual speeds, but if the survey backs up your perceptions then it can be used as a level to get the council to take some action.

I live in a village near southampton and the M27. At tea time it is a rat run as the m27 if Queued for 20 min to get on it.

It is a 30 limit, local c-class road, but 40-45 is quite safe. It is the volume of traffic that is the problem. Also the number of big bore exhausts. It can be hard to find a gap to turn right into your drive.
local commuters see it as quicker than using the motorway.
A speed camera would only bunch the traffic up and we can't have one out side every house. If the motorway was working properly then the trafic volume would be 1/3 what it is today. We do have a restriction on lorries. that makes a huge difference.

I wonder if volume is more of the problem than speed.

I'm sorry, but I would welcome any form of speed control in my village, which is in rural Durham - even a speed camera (shock, horror). :?

I'm in the same position in Cambridgeshire. Lack of speed limit
enforcement eventually results in a gradual relinquishing of the roads to
faster and faster traffic, until it is “normal” to have road slobs belting
through small towns and villages, making a lot of noise and fuss, creating
danger and generally taking over. And the good drivers join in too, by
responding to the mindless tailgating and foolish antics of the few. The
best policy is the simplest – set a good example by sticking within the
speed limit at all times. You save petrol and wear and tear as well, so it
must be a good thing. We can all be ambassadors of the road, if we want
to be, and we wouldn’t need to trot out all these lame excuses for
plain-old-speeding!

So wait a minute, the speed limit through this village is 30 but traffic is regularly doing 60-70.

No cash to be made their as these are all above the 26mph hreshold and thus straight to court.

If people are regularly doing 60-70 then I would guess that the road through the village isn't as dangerous as is being made out since so many people seem to think that it's a good speed and that the posted 30 limit is so rediculous it should be ignored.

Raising the limit to 50 may slow people down.

There is clearly a need to indicate to drivers by some passive but unavoidable means that a low speed is required. This has been done successfully in many villages by 'gates' (or chicanes), that force motorists entering the village to stop and give way to those exiting. It is far, far, better than humps, cameras etc. There is virtually no inconvenience to anybody, it is essentially the same as going round a permanently parked vehicle.

In addition, allow parking on the main road without any restrictions at all.

I can't help thinking Satnav has something to do with this as most people cannot read a map to save their life !!

"so rediculous it should be ignored" is not an indication of uncertanity, which is what Basingwerk was implying, quite the opposite actually.

My point still stands.

Excuse me but that's absolute crap. Ever heard of 'the Queen's Highway'?

Villagers might thnk they own the road, but they do not.

And 'enough' of what, exactly?

We need to promote safety, tolerance and co-operation on the roads; no more and no less.

It's the villagers who have to live and use the road in the widest number of ways - foot/cycle/drive, and whose proximity exposes them to the greates chance of any danger presented by the drivers behaviour.

Lets find out the facts before we make bold assumptions on the problem.
If it's a "rat run" then there is an inference it is commuter led - which might be simply addressed with some of the measures indicated.
A police presence at those times where the problem is worst, on just a regular basis might be a start, to establish the message.

I’m not asking for a limit change there. What qualifies you to say
that the limit should be increased in that place when you have not been
nor seen the place?

Yeah, listen up, SafeSpeed. Ernest's closer to the mark than you, on this one at least.

Could that be part of the problem?

From my own observations of "extended" limit zones round villages, when the limit starts at a point where there is no apparent reason for it being there people tend to treat it with considerably less attention - so by the time they reach the section where a limit is genuinely required they are back to "open road" speeds. A variation on "crying Wolf!".
