What is the simple defence of the old 'speed kills' type of argument? My facetious answer would be the sudden decelleration in fact kills and it was the lack of space that preceeded the accident that was the actual cause.

My aim is to find something that even the most dense of sun readers could grasp. :)

I answer it with a question (mostly). "Then why are our fastest roads the safest? Are you sure it's so simple?"

I've developed a standard response to questions, particulary useful for dealing with awkward participants at public meetings who's desire to get stuck in exceeds their knowledge.

'In what sense?'

That gets them thinking, especially if they're repeating a mantra.

follow up with a few well timed 'whys?' and watch the arguements dissolve before your eyes.

Maybe the SCPs are missing a trick. One boob with 'Slow' written on it and the other with 'Down'. Put that on a poster and watch the accident rate fall  It would probably be more effective than cameras. In all faireness you would then need a nubile male bottom upon which to write the same slogan to appeal to the ladies as well....

The accident rate would more than likely go up as everybody (well, the hetro male drivers & lesbians) would be too busy looking at the tits & pussy rather than what is happening in front of them.
