12th January 2006, four letters were printed this week:
Two aspects of Dr Linda Mountain's letter cannot pass without comment.
1) In other research she found that HALF of the benefit in fatal and serious collisions assigned to speed cameras was due to traffic displacement. It's a damn shame she didn't take this opportunity to mention the effect.
2) The 'ethical' problem suggested near the end of her letter makes my blood boil. Obviously she would believe that we should hand out untested drugs to patients because we dare not risk not treating them. What's unethical is foisting an unproven road safety intervention on a nation with the possibility (and I believe the result) of killing thousands through side effects.
