Just watched this interesting episode of the ITV Tonight series about whether emergency services drivers were being deterred from breaking normal traffic laws in emergency situations because of an increased risk of prosecution:

http://www.itv.com/news/2012-11-01/too-scared-to-speed/

Quite a reasonable, balanced programme, although predictably Ellen Booth of BRAKE reckoned more drivers needed to be prosecuted and some prof from Wolverhampton University questioned whether any police pursuits were justified

I wonder whether Ms Booth would change her tune if it was her house that was burning down, or her child that was choking to death.

Yes, I saw this too. Nice offices that BRAKE have.

To be in that outfit you need to be a "true believer" that the only evil is speed. It's like a cult with self reinforcing tenets.

I must admit, that although I am in favour of the emergency services being able to break the speed limit when necessary, I am concerned about the seemingly "new" idea that they don't put their sirens in during daylight (which is surely when they need them most). Why not? It's not as if they are going to wake the whole neighborhood up. I have seen a few cases of emergency vehicles in daylight with flashing lights but no sirens....not safe in my opinion. If you are going to go through red traffic lights, you really do need to warn people of your approach, well in advance.

re -no sirens - locally Police vehicles attendinh break ins had sirens on ,giving the thief advanced warning, so a set distance from the venue, sirens were switched off.
Onething I have noticed locally is that few drivers appear to notice sirens. I have ,on occasions had to pull in to give emergency vehicles more space ,and had often to flag down following vehicles. Perhaps a lot of drivers need some education ( something missing in todays robot motoring policeing) ,on what to do when theu HEAR a siren. A lot panic, and some seem unaware of the presence of an emergency vehicle.
On the topic of prosecution, perhaps if some of the dozy car drivers were prosecuted, then more might make an attempt to aid the emergency driver. Boot ,me thinks is on wrong foot, perhaps something Brake might like to take on board
