Mayor's 'Safe Zone' camera initiative is ready for action

A new initiative backed by the mayor will bring in average speed cameras to Bedford borough.

Mayor of Bedford, Dave Hodgson, is to introduce the speed reduction technology as he introduces ‘Safe Zones’ throughout our area.

Last month Bedford Borough Council received approval from the Department of Transport to use the new cameras on the highways. The first location where they will be installed is Milton Ernest.

Mayor Hodgson said “Residents in both urban and rural areas tell me that speeding in local neighbourhoods is a major concern, and parish councils and local community safety forums frequently express alarm at the speed of some traffic in residential areas.

“We have been in negotiation with Bedfordshire Police for some time about the introduction of speed cameras by the council and we will now introduce average speed cameras in order to reduce speeds across a wide area.”
And sadly they will ruin their road safety ... drivers will lose concentration and become frustrated. Considering that inattention and frustration are the two prime causes of road accidents what do they think they are doing ! ? Disgusted.

So, no evidence then, just the opinions of a few busybodies. How many times do we have to say that it's the presence of any traffic on "their" streets that is their problem.

If there is no evidence that anyone is actually travelling faster than the limit why does he think that speeds will reduce? How will they monitor this? By asking the same prodnoses in a few months time?

And if this is on residential estate roads, it will be the locals who get caught, not the mythical "boy racers" from outside.

If, as is likely, these average speed cameras are placed on roads leading in and out of residential estates they will catch nobody. The boy racers (if they exist) will zoom in past the first camera, tear round annoying the residents and... park outside their houses never to go past the exit camera.

Well, how do you think that these will be deployed? Like fixed cameras but just monitoring say 400 metres of road instead of a spot? I can also see them being vandalised pretty fast on a large urban estate (no matter how high the poles).

This cameras will surely help our authorities in monitoring the streets and in maintaining peace and order.

Hi and welcome! I'm curious about your choice of words there. Most people who think this sort of thing is a good idea tend to cite safety, but you've gone for peace and order?
