Mayor's 'Safe Zone' camera initiative is ready for action

A new initiative backed by the mayor will bring in average speed cameras to Bedford borough.

Mayor of Bedford, Dave Hodgson, is to introduce the speed reduction technology as he introduces ‘Safe Zones’ throughout our area.

Last month Bedford Borough Council received approval from the Department of Transport to use the new cameras on the highways. The first location where they will be installed is Milton Ernest.

Mayor Hodgson said “Residents in both urban and rural areas tell me that speeding in local neighbourhoods is a major concern, and parish councils and local community safety forums frequently express alarm at the speed of some traffic in residential areas.

“We have been in negotiation with Bedfordshire Police for some time about the introduction of speed cameras by the council and we will now introduce average speed cameras in order to reduce speeds across a wide area.”

If there is no evidence that anyone is actually travelling faster than the limit why does he think that speeds will reduce? How will they monitor this? By asking the same prodnoses in a few months time?
