Just found this on another site .Seems that they've revamped the stats on speeding

Smile! You’re on a speed camera!
Published on 23 Feb 2012
By VIVIENNE NICOLL CHIEF INSPECTOR SHARON SHAW

A YEAR-long clampdown on speeding drivers has been launched in a bid to cut the death toll on Glasgow’s roads.

The Make Glasgow Smile campaign is linked to the 61 speed cameras around the city which show a smiley face when a driver approaches within the limit.

A Strathclyde Police week of action last month resulted in more than 2000 drivers being prosecuted for various driving offences.

Almost half were for speeding and “inappropriate” driving.

The crackdown is the brainchild of the Go Safe Glasgow partnership.

It brings together the city council, Strathclyde Police, Strathclyde Fire & Rescue and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde who work in partnership to cut collisions and casualties.

Make Glasgow Smile will involve regular enforcement days throughout the year at known speeding hotspots.

These will include Lethamhill Road, Robroyston Road and Broomfield Road in the north of the city.

Danes Drive, Great Western Road and Kirklee Road will be targeted in the west and Gartcraig Road, Cumbernauld Road and Easterhouse Road in the east.

Queen Mary Avenue, Busby Road and Waterside Road are hotspots in the south east and Crookston Road, Mosspark Drive and Corkerhill Road in the south west.

The smiley signs will be able to gather information on the speed of traffic in particular locations to find out if drivers have slowed down or if further traffic calming measures are needed.

Jim Coleman, the city council’s roads spokesman, said: “Problems with speeding in inner city and residential areas continues to be a priority for our local communities.

“We want to be clear that drivers who ignore and exceed the speed limits are irresponsible and in order to make Glasgow’s roads safer for all road users, pedestrians included, we must make every effort to help them consider the consequences if they don’t slow down.

“In addition to the new smiley signs, we have also introduced mandatory 20mph zones in some residential areas and hope to launch a Go Safe Glasgow vehicle that can target areas and record incidences of speeding which we can then pass to the police to highlight the need for further enforcement action.”

Chief inspector Sharon Shaw, of Strathclyde Police road policing department, said: “Road safety and road crime are very high priorities and provide opportunities for the force to positively influence driver behaviour so as to reduce road collision casualties and deny criminals the use of the road network.

“High visibility patrols will be deployed to make sure all motorists are travelling at a suitable speed and driving in an appropriate manner for the prevailing road, traffic and weather conditions.

“The overall aim is to encourage road safety and casualty reduction.”

Speeding contributes to around 14% of all collisions involving an injury, 15% of crashes resulting in a serious injury and 24% of collisions which result in death.

So, they are "cracking down" on speeding on what evidence?

Quote:

Only contributes! Didn't they ask themselves what causes all the other 86%, 85% and 76% of the above events before deciding speed is the thing to target?

The real reason is here:

Quote:
Jim Coleman, the city council’s roads spokesman, said: “Problems with speeding in inner city and residential areas continues to be a priority for our local communities.

It's votes then.

So, how many were actually for speeding then?

As I said, another revamp of the stats on speeding, with many twists. Why can't these folks just realise that there's more to accidents than speed .Something like Excessive speed for the conditions, road etc , perhaps . Or just inexperience that might be corrected by education . Simply put ,that you look at a bend and assess the speed .If you can get round at that speed, you might get round a bit faster , or not . And put into the human computer , that gives you a reference for bends of that type. Simples - but the speed masters just don't get it . It's not simply speed ,but the inappropriate use of speed . :banghead: .Problem is that we're trying to educate those who profess to be the "experts" in this field ,and from my POV ,are showing a distinct lack of knowledge in this field .

Most "speed experts" seem to be called Mrs Jones (who has just bought a cottage with a nice thatched roof on a busy A road) and the other members of the coffee morning that she attends.

My views do not represent Safespeed but those of a driver who has driven for 39 yrs, in all conditions, at all times of the day & night on every type of road and covered well over a million miles, so knows a bit about what makes for safety on the road, what is really dangerous and needs to be observed when driving and quite frankly, the speedo is way down on my list of things to observe to negotiate Britain's roads safely, but I don't expect some fool who sits behind a desk all day to appreciate that.

It's even worse when they're officers at County hall, who consult with the police on limits and lower them anyway .
