Derbyshire.-- Now that the A623 Chapel-en-le-Frith-- Chesterfield has been reduced to 50MPH they have a camera van of silver/grey colour located between Wardlow Mires and Stoney Middleton. When leaving Wardlow Mires travelling towards Stoney Middleton he is located on the top of the hill on the left and can see right over the valley for around two miles or more so you have to be aware of this in good time. This has been observed on two Sundays which is when little or no HGVs are working and a resonable speed (above 50MPH) can be used. Although this camera is unmarked I was informed that ALL are in livery!!! by the person I/C road policing. They must think everyone is a wasted space, apart from themselves!!!!

Recently in Nuneaton we saw work being done on the last non digital Gatso in town.. We all thought -great, it was a waste of space anyway. But ,lo & behold ,it's been replaced with a digital Serco one. Looks like the speed awareness courses are paying dividends . :D

Last West Midlands fixed speed cameras switched off

Only thing that bothers me is date of announcement .
On TV ,the announcement was about updating the cameras to digital ones and using more mobile cameras .

"There are no fixed speed cameras working in the West Midlands from Monday, pending a decision on whether to upgrade to digital technology.

The police, who operate the cameras in Birmingham, the Black Country, Solihull and Coventry, are using mobile speed cameras instead.

All 304 of the region's speed cameras are now switched off in a move expected to save about £1m a year.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents has criticised the decision.

Road Safety Partnership cost estimates
£600,000 to remove existing speed cameras
£580,000 per year to upgrade the camera technology

Kevin Clinton, from the society, said: "All local authorities and police services are under pressure to make cuts and save money but RoSPA believes that cameras should continue to be used where casualty statistics show they are needed."

Tom Ansell from West Midlands Road Safety Partnership Board said: "They [the police] have decided they'll go for mobile enforcement and they believe they'll catch more motorists that way.

"The fact that they're mobile means they can get onto roads where we don't necessarily have speed cameras in place.""
