Comment: It's not a "surprise" at all - ALL the surveys produce similar results. This search brings up most of them for easy viewing.

SURVEY SAYS MAJORITY PREFER CAMERAS, DESPITE CONTROVERSY
09:30 - 06 April 2004

Love them or hate them, speed cameras have proved to be one of the most controversial topics in the Evening Telegraph during the past year.

As the number of speed cameras on our roads increases - there are currently 101 in Derbyshire - motorists have felt they are becoming persecuted.

Back in May last year, hundreds of motorists complained about the use of speed cameras on Raynesway during roadworks. Confusion arose when a temporary 30mph speed limit was imposed on the road, normally a 50mph zone.

Derbyshire police agreed not to fine those caught out after a catalogue of complaints.

In June, a police safety camera van, of which there are four operating in Derbyshire, was spotted illegally parked in the region on two occasions.

So it caused some surprise in October when a Derbyshire Safety Camera Partnership survey showed that 86 per cent of 10,000 people were in favour of the cameras.

Some cameras have proved so unpopular that people have resorted to vandalising them.

A brand new Truvelo camera, worth £40,000, was set alight in Nottingham Road last month.

It followed three similar incidents in Long Eaton since November.

Hmm!

And a brand new Truvelo in the Manchester area (went live in January) got hit by bloke with a can of "Fill Big Gaps!"

Unfortunately, seems to be back in action - so guess we need err U Know Hoo!

Funny, if so popular - why the vandalism?

And why does every one you meet roll their eyes and scream "Stealth Tax!" "Cash Cow" etc.

Apart from Evil Inked Up One and Mrs Law Abidng One - who give me the impression that they do not drive that often, nor that far!

Else they would think like er ...."normal" :? :? ? folk

The DfT lays down an obligatory set of survey questions. We have a page about them:

Information compiled by Safe Speed Visitor Lloyd Carter.
