TfL cuts funding for speed cameras

09.07.09 Staff at one of Britain's biggest speed camera units could face job cuts after funding was halved.

Transport for London has cut the budget of the London Safety Camera Partnership from £5.9?million to £3?million. The unit in Westminster is responsible for 900 speed and red-light cameras.

Officials said the move will not affect processing of traffic tickets.

But the last-minute decision has sparked a row after the Met was left to pick up the shortfall.

Senior officers said they cannot put up more money and the unit will run out of cash in September, when it will be down-sized.

A TfL spokesman said: “TfL is committed to investing in and improving road safety.”
