Mother fights for life after horror road crash

A WOMAN was in a critical condition this morning after a car on the opposite side of a dual carriageway was catapulted on to the top of her car.

The woman, aged 42, narrowly escaped being crushed to death as she was driving her Mercedes along Moss Bank Way, Bolton, at about 3pm yesterday.

She was trapped in the car for almost an hour and had to be cut out of the wreckage by firefighters.

Two men arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving have been bailed until March 24 pending further inquiries.

The mother's two children, who were back seat passengers, walked away from the horrific crash with only minor injuries.

The accident is understood to have happened when a car smashed into the central reservation.

It was catapulted into the air and on to the other side of the road, hitting the woman’s car. One of the cars also hit a lamp post.

A medical team, including three ambulances, two rapid response vehicles and an incident manager were sent to the scene, and an emergency team was placed on standby at the Royal Bolton Hospital.

The woman remained at the hospital last night in a serious condition.

Firefighters said the Mercedes’ inflated airbags made it difficult to cut the woman free. Watch commander Kevin Barrow said: “She was trapped in the vehicle for about 53 minutes and had two children in the back. The other car was quite a long way down the road.”

Moss Bank Way was last night closed at the junction of Halliwell Road and Captain Clough Road, and Albion Terrace was also closed off.

The closures were expected to remain for several hours.Police were called to the scene and arrested two men on suspicion of dangerous driving.

Now if Jazz and Jules are right.. that road crawls with speed cams. It was reduced from 50 mph to 40 mph and 30 mph on route from Blackburn Road (Asda?) to Chorley New Road in its Ring Road around Bolton?

My point? Speed cams do not deter thugs at all. I think thugs in a TWOC here. You would have to be at some serious speed to take off like that. Surely :? :?

In-laws do not drive the road that often. They go off memory here, It goes through a "built-up". They seem to think the crash barrier to be normal. Neither Jazz nor Julie seem able to pinpoint some weak barrier in the DC here. They say a kerb .. and that driver would have to be seriously illegal to "catapult" as described here.

They know Halliwell Road has a gradient when it meets the Ring Road.. and think the road cambers slightly at this point.. but not so as to cause a car to catapult through the air at "accepted envelope pushing" here.

They say the road had limit reduced in 2003 to 40 mph to 30 mph at one point from previous 50 mph and that this was enforced by scams.

Obviously these thugs take zero notice then. :scratchchin:

A fact we already know :furious:
