Tributes for 'popular' boy
Yakub Qureshi

TRIBUTES have been paid to a popular student who was killed as he crossed a busy road on his way to school.

Rofael Butt, 15, died instantly after being struck by the Stagecoach bus on Stockport Road, Longsight.

His family said the Manchester Academy student had popped into a shop to buy sweets before crossing the road.

Local residents have been campaigning for a new permanent crossing to be set up at the accident blackspot.

The crash happened close to the teenager's house on nearby Britnall Avenue, where he lived with younger sister Slaha, brothers Zaid and Faried and mother Tesreen and father Rohail, a mini-bus driver for disabled people.

At the family home, an uncle, who did not wish to be named, said: "He was a lovely lad. He was doing well at school and was going to the mosque for Koran lessons. His mum and dad are devastated."

Family friend Shazia Ahmed said: "We saw him lying on the road and the police had put a blanket over him. When we found out who it was, I couldn't believe it. We started saying prayers for him.

"He was always well behaved and helpful. I've known him since he was a little boy and he has always played with my two boys. It's absolutely terrible."

Dangerous

Her husband Mohammed Navid said: "It is a very dangerous road. A lot of the children get up early to go to school but from seven o'clock onwards there's so much traffic that it's difficult for them to cross."

The accident happened at 7.50am outside the Spot garage on the busy road at its junction with Richmond Grove East. Crossing wardens work on the junction - but only after 8am.

There have been a number of fatal and serious accidents on at the section of Stockport Road in recent years.

Mum of four Sandra, a teaching assistant at a local school, said: "There is a huge housing estate and four primary schools around here. Children are crossing the road all the time."

Police do not believe that the driver was at fault and have described the incident as a tragic accident.

Farhad Miah, imam at the Jamia Islamic Nabuwwat Centre, where Rofael went to after-school classes, said: "Rofael was a good boy. Nobody had a bad thing to say about him.

"We have been trying for a long time to get a pedestrian crossing outside this street. There have been a number of accidents out there and I only hope that people will take notice and do something now."

One friend from the mosque said: "He was a good guy. He was into football and would take his little brothers out to play and was really close with his sister."

Manchester Academy principal Kathy August said: "Rofael was a hard working, popular and enthusiastic student.

"The academy is a close family and everybody is mourning our loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with his parents and family at this time of unimaginable grief."

Sad story. Not speed related as such. More fail to COAST by each party. and it's fails to COAST which cause these senseless tragedies.

We have to acknowledge this. But suggesting COAST seems to be interpreted as

HOW DARE YOU CRITICISE MY DRIVING >> RIDING SKILLS!!!!!

No. It's constructive advice. Be blinkered if you wish. People are dying and speed is not the prime cause. Driver error ..per the TRL .. and COAST failings lie at the root.

So if you are going to spout "driver error kills" when trying to justify why a speed cam fails .. you can hardly deride COAST here

I should post this on PH where some cyclists are trolling.
