Road death numbers increase dramatically
By Chris Gregory
THE rates of death and injury on the roads in Hampshire last year look set to be higher than expected.
Ernie Sage, road safety services manager for Hampshire County Council, told a meeting of Basingstoke Road Safety Council that preliminary, unpublished figures show a rise in the number of people who died or were seriously injured on the county's roads.
Mr Sage said that, while the county remains on course to reduce the number of road fatalities by 40 per cent by 2010, the latest figures represent a setback.
He said: "We have noticed a severe upturn in the number killed or injured in the county and the district.
"We are still just about on target for 2010. If we continue in 2008 as we have done in 2007, then we will be really far off delivering the 2010 target."
Mr Sage, speaking at the meeting at the Civic Offices, said he had not yet identified the cause of the increase.
He said: "We have clearly seen quite a dramatic increase in 2007.
"That's not unique in Hampshire, and it's the same in the UK and in Europe for last year. There are no obvious reasons for it."
Mr Sage said the final figures for 2007 will be published in April.

So even after all the manipulating of figures they still have to admit that road deaths and SI’s have severely risen. How long have speed cameras been used in Hampshire and yet they still can’t reduce road deaths and SI’s, living proof that cameras don’t work.
Even though the figures aren’t out I’d imagine they’ll have to do some serious doctoring of figures to get to their 40% reduction by 2010. And then what other so called road safety measures will they introduce to help them reach their figures, and still put the reduction down to speed cameras.
