The year 2007 was the deadliest 12 months on local roads for four years.

At the time the Target went to print on New Year's Eve official statistics showed a total of 79 people had lost their lives on routes in Lincolnshire in 2007.

This was the worst number of fatalities since 2003 when there were 103 deaths.

In the three years prior to 2007 there had been a steady decline in fatal accidents with 77 in 2004, 69 in 2005 and 66 in 2006 but this reduction has now come to a sad

end.

Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership communications manager Brian Burns told the Target that despite the rise in road deaths, the number of KSI (Killed or Seriously Injured) collisions in 2007 had stayed at almost the same level as the previous year.

He said Lincolnshire was well on course to meet its 10 year Government target of reducing KSIs by 40 per cent by 2010 and said the Partnership was committed to continuing its efforts to improve road safety through education and training.

This included plans to launch a new campaign in February called Too Fast Too Soon aimed at drivers aged between 17 and 24 who are seen as a high risk group.

Mr Burns conceded speed was a factor in many accidents but refuted suggestions that Lincolnshire's roads were to blame.

He said: "If we all drive according to the conditions then there is never a reason anyone should come to any harm."

I wonder if someone can point me in the right direction of the stats that he is referencing?

Can we find out if they are telling the truth ?

I wonder if we can see how they mark KSI - and if the hospital figures tally with this - or like in most places the Hosp figures are usually far higher from RTA's (road traffic accidents) - anyone help here?

well this is quite interesting really as perhaps they are finally going to start a *sensible* policy - but somehow I doubt it - can we find out more ....? Anyone care to delve?

As far as I can see, ALL the scam partnerships are targetting the youth element.
Cumbria certainly is.
There is also the DfT prompted reduction to 30mph in ALL villages.
This is in line with the French way of using the town name sign as a limit sign - except in France there is no lollipop, just the name board with a red margin around it.

I dont believe it will make any contribution to safety - just appease many villagers, and present further opportunities for scam partnerships - police should already be targeting known problem areas!

The general SCP response nationwide seems to be "So what if more people died - at least when you hide them amongst the seriously injured, it doesnt LOOK so bad - and we can manipulate the SI stats!".

I'm sure much of the SI reduction is more in car safety features. A look around the car park at work shows nearly ALL have airbags now, and seatbelt tensioners etc. are close behind. A few years back there would have been more older cars with few safety features which are standard on ALL new models.
