shocking statistic - 10 deaths in 2006, 16 so far in 2007....in a region which is quite heavy with camera usage.

The numbers are far too small to distinguish between random variation and a real increase.

I'll have a look at the longer term history after lunch.

That wouldn't stop them from crowing about a 60% reduction if it was the other way round...

I've got figures for 'Lothian and Borders', but not Borders alone. The L&B figures are in the 50 range.

The A68 is a fabulous scenic road which as many excellent safe opportunities to pass the many lorries that use this road (it's significantly shorter than the A1 hence all the lorries).

In England (at least last time I went that way) there is not a single camera. But once you cross the border they are positioned in the middle of practically every straight - particularly north bound.

So your stuck behind some infuriatingly slow lorry that trundles along at a average of about 35mph when you know you could easily average 50mph.

Every time you get a huge straight to pass the slow lorry there's another sodding camera half way along the straight.

Every time I have been on this road I have seen cars set off to pass a lorry (with ample time) get half way past and ram on the brakes and either drop right back and force the way back into the long queue of cars or on a few occasions they even break half way past on the "wrong" side if the road, drop their speed back to 60 until they pass the camera and then accelerate again to finish the manoeuvre. Alternatively those in the know sometimes wait (even though they could easily pass) and wait until they pass the camera will then attempt a near suicidal dash before the next bend - just because some half-wit thought it would be a jolly wheeze to stick a camera at just the point to make a safe passing manoeuvre near impossible.

It's a perfect recipe for either dodgy overtaking manoeuvres, unnecessary fatigue and total frustration.

I reckon these must be amongst the most dangerous "safety" cameras in the country (union).

Can there be a better example of why cameras are placed where they are - to make money !! It's nothing to do with road safety
