Just listening to KGSR Radio Austin in Texas and there was a news item concerning road safety. They have recent statistics published stating that there has been a large increase in collisions caused by tailgating. The Chief of Police has responded by putting an extra 50 Motorcycle Police (yes thats right, 50)on to the local roads to "enforce better driver behaviour and target cellphone use and tailgating" No mention of speeding.....

Now that is proper policing.

I know the US has massive resources compared to the UK, but I wonder how many extra road-cops we could get with £115million.

I doubt that there are 50 Motorcycle Police in every regional force let alone 50 that are spare.

They have evidence that "cell phone use" is dangerous? Or do they have a law allowing them to make money from it like over here?

I have to say that it's usually a bit of dodgy driving which draws attetion to the drivers on the mobile.
Those that do so safely go largely unnoticed. The legislation is the result of idiots like the one who caused the Selby Rail crash who often commit a whole host of other sins too.
Personally, I dont see the point of using a mobile while driving - what's the rush - they usually tell you the number of a missed call.

One thing I noticed in Florida was that if there was no passenger the driver was on the phone. Well maybe now always, but it seemed that way. The roads over there are much longer, so having someone to talk to could keep you from getting bored. I still haven't noticed any link between phone use and stupidity.
It's like, if someone is being an eejit and using a mobile phone then the problem is that they are an eejit.

I thought the "mobile phones are dangerous, we just have to find out why" thing was limited to people in the UK.
