Speeder pic faker is caged

A STUDENT was jailed for three months for trying to avoid a £60 speeding fine by sending a doctored picture of his car to police.

A speed camera caught Saif-U-Rehman Shafiq, 21, doing 39mph along a 30mph Manchester road.

Police wrote to him saying they intended to prosecute and enclosed a picture from the Gatso showing Shafiq’s black Honda Civic.

But rather than pay a £60 fine and get three penalty points he said the car was not his.

He backed up his lie with a picture of what he said was his vehicle, another black Honda Civic, although a slightly different model.

Shafiq used a computer to superimpose his registration number. But police noticed the plate was too big for the car.

The tearful IT and business student admitted perverting the course of justice at Manchester Crown Court.

Another criminal caged  and what happened when a ticket office worker tampered with a photo showing dates on a parking ticket sign? I don’t think he/she was sent to prison for perverting the course of justice.

Way too harsh a punishment. A suspended sentence or community service order would have been better, especially considering that burglars are set free quite often.

Indeed. It's hard to see how falsely claiming innocence can ever be worse than falsely accusing an innocent person, given the traditional presumption of innocence in our system. I'm not saying this guy is blameless, but I do feel that falsely accusing someone else is always worse than what he did.

I thought the recommended sentencing for PTCOJ was supposed to be proportionate to the offence which the perpetrator was seeking to deflect.

In that case we should never have got rid of capital punishment!

Is this supposed to PUNISH or DETER, or appease the public's affront?
