Police to hold road death summit

The summit aims to reduce the number of young deaths on roads
The increasing number of young people being killed on Scotland's roads is set to be discussed by police chiefs and motoring groups.

The summit in Perth, organised by the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland (Acpos), will discuss measures to tackle the growing death toll.

Proposals include restrictions on new drivers carrying passengers and a night-time curfew.

Tayside Police Chief Constable John Vine described it as a vital meeting.

Driver attitudes

"We need to get all the individuals and organisations involved in road safety around the table and reach some consensus on how we might address the young driver problem," he said.

Figures published by Acpos showed a 30% rise in the number of under-25s killed this year.

The Young Driver Strategy Summit will hear from Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson.

Representatives from driving bodies, including the Driving Standards Agency and Road Safety Scotland, are also set to attend.

Topics to be discussed among the road safety experts will include young driver attitudes and minimum learning periods.

Pleased to see they're thinking of attitudes, hopefully in a positive way.
