THREE times as many accidents occurred on a road near a Mole Valley speed camera than statistics originally indicated.

The Surrey Safety Camera Pa rtnership (SSCP) has always maintained that the number of accidents happening near the speed camera on the A24 at Mickleham has been dramatically reduced since its introduction.

But figures released by Surrey Police reveal three times as many crashes have occurred on that stretch of road in the past year.

Released under the Freedom of Information Act, Surrey Police's figures show there were 12 injuries caused by car crashes along the road between April 2005 and September 2006, including one serious injury.

But the SSCP's figures say there were only four slight injuries over the same time period.
