A 42 year old mother of teenagers (also hurt) died in this incident in Bury.

A VW Golf was turning right (driver's side crumpled)/

Biker collided, He came off. His bike skidded and pinned this lady against a wall. Her teenage children were also hurt in the skid towards them

Biker sustained broken leg,. VW driver in shock.

Residents say fast road and SMIDSY junction. But if the driver was turning right and right hand side damaged .. it does look a bit iffy for the biker here

COAST failings leading to disaster .. but by the biker or driver. Initial photos point to the 40 year old biker here

I do feel for all those involved.. especially the woman's family here.

My sisters say this was in Bolton News on Saturday. with photos of the scene. I have looked on "thisisbolton" but not found it yet

Hate to stereotype, but I doubt this was someone who used their bike every day!

And anyone who wants to call themselves 'advanced'...

...check for overtaking traffic before turning...
...check for overtaking traffic before turning...
...check for overtaking traffic before turning...

Yeah, except then you would never be able to overtake anything, anywhere except on a dual carriageway/motorway. You have to reasonably rely on rational actions from the overtakee and observe their "body language".

This is not a comment on this particular case.

Not true, think of the miles of single-carriageway without a junction to the right!

Quite! Shoulder checks are not just for bikers!

Also applies when turning left onto a single carriageway road from a side road.

You're looking right for conflicting traffic and your opportunity to go - meanwhile someone approaching from your left might be looking for an opportunity to overtake - using the exact same bit of road that you're planning to turn into. :yikes:

Commenting on the circumstances as presented, I typically (in a car) do NOT overtake on single carriageway roads if there are pedestrians on the pavement on my right. Partly I guess because I don't want to panic them, but principally because they present a hazard that I ordinarly would slow down (or at least cover the brake) for in case any get distracted and come into my path. Too many conflicts by far for a safe overtake.

What constitutes a junction in this context? A gap in the hedge to the right? I am sensitive about this because I have been caught out by someone turning right into a field entrance and only signalling at the very last minute. This on a long straight with good visibility.

technically a 50:50 (check when turning right and check when overtaking), but yes bikers should never overtake on approach to a side road.

Statistically much more likely to hit the car you overtake than an oncoming one - which is what most people focus on
