It is so frustrating that regular, safe motorway traffic is being targetted this way in the name of oversimplified road safety statements... this just smacks of quango brainwashing. Bah!

Chance for feedback on the "have your say" bit of the BBC site (the cameras are not very popular by the look of it so far :) )

Hi all! :) This is my first post.

I was reading about this earlier on the BBC news website and came across someone's opinion.

Quote:
Statistics show that country lanes are the most dangerous roads, so why are they not putting cameras there? Is it because there isn't the traffic volume to make enough in fines?
Ben Bell, Canterbury, Kent, UK

I found this to be a really interesting question and it just reinforces my view that Speed Camera = Extra Cash for Government to spend.

As I write this, the M4 is still closed following an HGV colliding with a car earlier on today - admittedly just west of J18, but still nowt to do with anyone even close to the 70mph limit.

Cheers
Peter

One reader commented: "My car is fitted with an anti-speed camera device. Behind the steering wheel is a little disc with some numbers around it. If I make sure that the little arm doesn't go above the number stated on the side of the road, then the cameras are beaten!"

This is a scary comment. Shouldn't she be watching the road? I hope she's never driving behind me.

I wonder how many of the pro camera posters on the BBC site have driving licenses or are employed by the scammers....

The ABD has just posted a press release (435) on their website. :camera: :70:

The M4 is closed again this morning because of an accident involving two lorries - right in the middle of the camera zone.

And, on the radio this morning, they mentioned yet another accident near J14 on the same day as the last one I reported.

That now makes three serious accidents within the space of a week - since they started the cameras.

Not looking too good is it, JJ?

Cheers
Peter

EDIT: At least one person was killed in today's collision.

So clearly, excessive speed causes speed limited lorries to crash....?

If somebody dies in a pile-up at one of these camera sites due to panic breaking, will the head of the scamera partnership be held liable under Corporate Manslaughter charges?

Don't be daft - they will find a way to spin that in their favour. If Joe Public stood by the side of the road pointing a laser at cars and caused an accident, you can be damn sure they would be up in front of the beak, sharpish.

:D :D :D :D

And yet again this morning - although I don't have any details - I just heard they'd closed a couple of lanes after an accident at J14.

Thats four now

I also heard that in the five days they've been running the scameras they've only caught eight drivers doing over 80mph.

Fewer collisions, eh, JJ?

Cheers
Peter

Funny, isn't it Pete, how quiet JJ has become all of a sudden?

:)

A risky move. I hope the revenue is worth it.

When the inevitable panic-braking-initiated motorway pile-up happens and tens of people lose their lives, the adverse publicity will prompt a public backlash the likes of which the Camera Partnerships have never even dreamed of.

A group of mothers that have lost their children campaign a LOT harder than a few disgruntled motoring enthusiasts.....

Not scary at all. Everyone knows that as long as you are travelling below the speed limit you are automatically a 100% safe driver and will not have an accident. You can drive with your eyes closed if you want to, it doesn't matter. All that matters is the difference between the number showing on your speedo and that on the signs beside the road.

Sheesh....

I admire your belief in the road-calming effect of cameras, but experience has taught us that they have anything but a calming effect on most drivers.

By the sound of it, the number of collisions on this stretch of road has gone UP since the cameras were deployed.

Another serious accident blocked the M4 this morning, and yet another was reported on another thread just the other day.
Thats six I know of since the scameras started rolling.

It's totally beyond me how anyone can imagine that forcing three lanes of motorway traffic to the same speed, and therefore leading to bunching with nobody willing to make any sort of headway on anyone else, is going to do anything for traffic flow or safety.
If you have more vehicles travelling in close proximity to each other for longer periods then you're going to have more collisions. It's not rocket science.

Cheers
Peter
